Clinical Rotations

Clinical rotations occur in the final year of the Bond University medical program from June to October. There are two blocks, each of eight weeks duration. The key elements of the rotations for GP trainers and for the practice you work in are as follows:

  • A minimum of 3 sessions per week in consultations with you as the GP trainer. This time may include direct observation/participation, the students seeing patients on their own, home visits and nursing home visits.
  • 1 session per week with practice nurse, if available
  • 1 session per rotation with practice reception

There is more flexibility in the students timetable during clinical rotations and these sessions can occur at a time convenient to you and the practice between Monday and Thursday.

Students will spend the week before the rotation commences at the University participating in workshops on practical aspects of general practice, to aid their learning with you and make them as useful as possible to the practice. The students will have completed several hospital rotations prior to coming to you

All accredited practices are eligible for a Practice Incentive Payment of $100 for each of these sessions. A session is classed as a minimum of 3 hours.

We would be delighted if you could take one student in each of the 2 blocks, but if this is not possible, having students for 1 block would be much appreciated. There is also the option of sharing a student between you and another doctor either in your practice or at an alternate practice. If you are able to offer only 1 or 2 sessions a week please note this on the response form.

We will undertake to provide GP trainer orientation sessions prior to commencement of GP rotations to prepare and assist you with any teaching issues that arise during rotations. You will also be provided with a GP Trainers Handbook, information relating to assessments associated with the rotation and a clinical skills checklist outlining the students experience to date.

We hope you can join us in training our future doctor's, history shows medical students often choose to stay in the area in which they are trained; remember today's medical students are one of the solutions to the current workforce problems. This is a great opportunity to showcase General Practice to medical students and make a real difference to the future of our discipline.
